Noten sheet music Notation

The concept of notation in tango music

by Juan María Solare
(from the CD Tango Monologues)

The traditional tango scores have been not conceived to be performed exactly as written. Even if they can be performed without any change, it is taken for granted that each performer should contribute a personal vision of each tango. (This criteria, in practice, is not very far away from that of the European Baroque era.) When playing tango, to be faithful to the score tends to mean playing it wrong. In an ideal case, each performer would play his own arrangement of the composition; in this way he would arrange each piece according to his own technical possibilities and expressive maturity. The "original" score is intentionally open; as a obligation to be free and to take decisions.
